Salmonella is a bacterium that is acquired by eating contaminated food that has not been thoroughly cooked. Chickens and turkeys naturally carry this bacterium, and it is found in their meat and their eggs. So, eating raw or undercooked eggs and poultry can lead to salmonella infection. In addition, if cooks handling salmonella-contaminated foods do not wash their hands or utensils carefully, they can spread the bacteria to other foods. Often several family members develop food poisoning after eating the same meal, or several patrons of the same restaurant become sick around the same time.
Salmonella is often the culprit in food poisoning. Some of the symptoms include diarrhea, stomach ache as well as insidious fever. Although the bug is not usually fatal, the very old and the very young are at a high risk. Around 40,000 Americans are affected by some sort of food poisoning involving salmonella each year. It is estimated that 600 die as a result of this infection.
